MOTHERS' UNION

Our meeting this month is on Tuesday 13 April at 2.30pm in St Faith's Hall. The speaker will be Brother John Leathes who informs me that he will be talking about 'A life spent in the world of fashion'. It is a most intriguing title and promises to be an interesting afternoon. Any non Mothers' Union members who are interested are invited to join us.

We were delighted to welcome Bro John Leathes as our speaker at our April meeting. What an interesting and surprising afternoon it turned out to be when Bro Leathes revealed 'A life in the world of fashion'. He began his fashion career by working in Harrods in London. From there he proceeded to work in the British Isles in both Scotland and Ireland in other fashion houses. Then he described further experiences abroad in Paris with Dior, Florence and the USA where he was present when Martin Luther King spoke his memorable words "I have a dream ...". His talk brought back many memories for us of fashions we had all experienced and many questions ensued.

Now we look forward to the following events in May:

On Saturday 8 May we are hosting a Deanery Fund Raising Event. There will be a soup and ploughman's lunch in St Faith's Hall – two sittings, one at 12 noon followed by the next at 1.00pm. The cost is £5 per person. Other branches will help with the raffle etc. but we do need you, our members, to help – please phone Doreen Jenkins on Winchester 867552.

On Tuesday 11 May there is a Quiet Day at Wolvesey 10.00am to 3.3Opm. The speaker is Rev Shirley Morris and her theme is 'God's delight in you'. Please bring your own lunch.

On Friday 14 May our evening supper meeting is in St Faith's Hall at 7.00pm. Liz Webster will describe her climb up Mt Kilimanjaro. Offers of food will be much appreciated – cold chicken, ham, quiche, salad, puddings. Please phone Evelyn on Winchester 870426.

It will be a busy month!

The Deanery Fund-raising Lunch was hosted by St Cross in the parish hall on 8 May. We were supported by the other branches in the deanery and raised £216.73 which was a good effort. Our grateful thanks to all those who helped, especially Doreen who organized it all.

Our Supper Evening on 14 May was an enjoyable affair with Liz Webster talking about her conquest of Mount Kilimanjaro. She showed us many pictures of her progress up to the top. We were impressed by her sheer determination to succeed and she did it in four and a half days!

On 8 June we have the Master coming to speak to us, and on 16 June there is the Festival Service in the Cathedral starting at 11.00am.

We were delighted to welcome the Master as our speaker for our June meeting. His subject was "Angels" and how fascinating it turned out to be. The many references to angels in both the Old and New Testaments really set us thinking about their substance, their characters and how they affect our lives. The questions which followed started an interesting discussion.

A reminder now of our July meeting. On Tuesday 13 July we are meeting outside the Tourist Office at the Guildhall at 2.30pm for a guided tour of the High Street. Clare Dixon will be our guide and I am sure that there will be surprises in store. The tour will last one hour and then we will have tea together afterwards.
