The Wayfarer’s Dole

The Hospital of St Cross is famous world-wide for its unique and ancient tradition of the Wayfarer's Dole. The founder of this tradition was a Cluniac monk whose order always gave bread and wine to travellers at a time when St Cross stood on an important east-west route for merchants and pilgrims.
Today’s Dole, a drink of beer and some bread, has come to reflect this custom.

“Honestly requested and willingly given”

Some of the best stories from the Ghastly Goings On tours have now been published as a booklet, also available from the Porter's Lodge at £2.50. A good antidote to official histories and/or a lighthearted gift for someone who knows the Hospital!

Tour Bookings

Why not make a group booking with a Brother Exhibitor who will be your personal guide for your tour of the hospital

These tours last about 1 hour and then finish your day with a drink in the tearooms

Tours with an exhibitor are at no extra charge but must be booked in advance

For booking please phone the Porter 01962 851375 or email stcross1132@btinternet.com
